The most disaster-prone DIY fans are Londoners, according to a survey.

And men are more likely to bungle a job around the home, with 15 per cent fouling up in the past year, compared with ten per cent of women.

Among the most common blunders were collapsing shelves, flooding a bathroom, cutting through electrical wires and falling through a roof.

‘These mistakes can be very expensive, with the average cost being around £1,000,’ said a spokesman for Rated People, which analysed 820,000 job queries on its website over the past year.
