What’s this white stuff then? Golden retrievers are baffled by their first sight of snow – before diving through 40-inch deep snowdrift to play

  • Lisa and Rusty Hanafin woke up to let Harry Winston and Louis Vuitton outside
  • The two dogs stare at the wall of snow confused before pushing into the barrier
  • Dogs had to be enticed back inside with some hotdogs they enjoyed it so much

This is the adorable moment two golden retriever puppies encountered snow for the very first time – diving head-first into a seemingly impenetrable 40.5-inch white wall.

Lisa and Rusty Hanafin woke up to let eight-month-old brothers Harry Winston and Louis Vuitton out in their back garden in New York, US, after a snow storm.

The 54-year-old mother-of-two says the dogs found it so ‘wonderful’ she could only entice them back inside with some hotdogs.

Reinsurance broker Rusty, 60, said that as soon as the pair realised that the white ‘quicksand’ wasn’t going to harm them they thought it was the ‘greatest thing they’d ever discovered’.

Footage shows Rusty opening the door to reveal a massive barrier of snow – leaving the two dogs staring at it, visibly perplexed.

However they soon egg each other on and leap into the wall, before running and leaping through the mountains of snow.

Lisa, who’s a stay-at-home-grandmother, said: ‘It was wonderful to watch them play in the snow – when they went out and it was falling they were looking up trying to catch it in their mouths – it was amazing.

‘They thought it was wonderful – we couldn’t get them back inside and had to have a bag of hotdogs to get them to come in.

‘They don’t go outside off the leash just yet as they’re too small – so to have the door open and to be free to go was so exciting to them, but they didn’t know what to do when they saw that wall of snow.’

Rusty added: ‘It was almost like snowy quicksand and as soon as they realised that the snow wasn’t going to hurt them, it was the greatest thing that they’d ever discovered.

‘They had a great time out there.’
